This piece was developed in response to a prompt in my Conceptual Design course, in which we were challenged to transform a basic kimono pattern and a single square of canvas fabric using fabric manipulation techniques. I chose to explore smocking to create a sculptural spinal motif that runs along the back of the garment. The design draws inspiration from the human form, symbolizing both the physical structure of the spine and the deeper connection between the body, nature, and mortality. As the wearer moves, the manipulated fabric shifts organically, reinforcing the idea of life, movement, and impermanence. This project reflects my interest in using traditional techniques to communicate conceptual narratives through form and motion.
